Tomato growing tips
Quality Food for your soil is a must
Beef up the Soil Tomatoes thrive in rich, well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. To determine pH, pick up a soil test kit from the Garden Center or your local Cooperative Extension Service. Neutral soil will have a pH of 7.0. You should aim for a pH of 6.5 to 6.8.
Tomato Food
Regularly feeding tomatoes with a liquid feed makes all the difference to crop quantity and quality. Use a specific tomato fertilizer, which will be high in potassium, or make your own using comfrey leaves. Avoid over-feeding as this can cause problems.
High quality compost—material that is well-decomposed, dark in color, and crumbly—is the best tomato fertilizer to use regardless of the soil you're working with. Not only does an annual application of compost boost the nutrients available in the soil, but it also improves soil structure.
What Tomatoes need
Tomato plants need three main nutrients from fertilizer—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—along with other trace minerals to grow and fruit successfully, says expert gardener Emma Biggs. Most fertilizers are a combination of those three components; the packaging will indicate the percentage of each.

Watering and Drainage
- WateringTomatoes need consistent moisture, especially when they are young. Water them thoroughly so that the water soaks deep into the soil, which helps the plants stay hydrated and encourages their roots to grow deeper. Young plants need about two gallons of water per week, but you can increase that amount as the plant grows. You can water them two or three times a week, and if you're growing them in containers, you can use a drip system to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid watering the foliage, as this can lead to leaf scorching and other diseases. Instead, water directly into the soil.

Know Your Zones
Tomato Climate Zones
Here are some tips for growing tomatoes in different zones:
- Location-Tomatoes need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, but may benefit from some shade in warmer climates. In colder climates, they may need more sun. You can try planting in a raised bed or garden next to a south-facing wall.
- Soil-Tomatoes prefer rich, well-drained soil. Before planting, you can work in amendments and balanced fertilizer, but avoid products with high nitrogen.
- Planting-You can plant transplants when the soil temperature is at least 50°F, which is usually around mid-May. To encourage healthy root development, you can bury up to six inches of the stem when planting.
- Spacing-Don't crowd your seedlings, and give each one enough space to grow into a full plant. You can use small, separate pots to help them grow.
- Watering-Before the fruit sets, you can water your tomatoes 2–3 times a week if it doesn't rain much. After the fruit has set, you can water them 3–4 times a week, but be careful not to water erratically during flowering, as this can cause the flowers to drop. In subtropical climates, you can try watering at the roots to keep the leaves dry and prevent fungal disease.
- Mulching-Mulching around the base of your plants can help retain moisture, keep weeds down, and keep the plants cool during the day and warm at night. You can use organic mulch, straw, clean hay, compost, paper, or black plastic. Black plastic can also help your plants mature and be ready to harvest earlier.
- Variety-You can consider choosing a variety of tomato that's resistant to leaf diseases if those are a problem in your area. You can also try rotating your crops, as some diseases can survive in the soil for several years.
- Frost-If you live in an area that experiences frost, you can cover your tomato plants to protect them. You can check your local zip code to find out the last spring frost date.
- Tomatoes require rich, well drained soil in a full sun location, which means at least 6 hours of direct sun per day, and ideally more. This is especially important in colder northern climates (zone 5 and below) with shorter growing seasons.
